What can I expect?

First, you’ll receive a joint-by-joint orthopedic screening, an assessment of fundamental movement patterns and a review of prior injuries. Next, we’ll discuss your needs and goals and build a personalized training program designed to help you optimize your health and performance. Then, we'll guide you through that program in a safe, friendly environment that is welcoming to people of all ages and abilities.

Sports Physical Therapy

Comprehensive injury management ensures you stay on top of your game. With SMHC's specialized sports physical therapy, we focus on injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement for athletic individuals of all ages.

Performance Training

  • Small Group Training - Limited to four to six individuals in each session, small group training is facilitated and monitored by qualified staff to ensure proper technique.
  • Summer Performance Program - Reduce the risk of injury and prepare for the fall athletic season. Our fun and challenging six-week program includes pre- and post-program health data collection. 
  • Performance Training services are available on a fee-for-service basis. Cash and credit card payments are accepted. 

Occupational Therapy

Return to sport, work and life quickly with our therapists who specialize in upper extremity orthopedic and neurological injuries. Sessions are driven by your specific goals.

Sports Medicine

Comprehensive Concussion Management

We offer baseline testing of student-athletes using ImPACT™ neurocognitive testing, post assessment and cognitive testing for concussions, and full rehabilitation services. We also provide ImPACT Pediatric, the only FDA-cleared assessment tool for athletes ages five to eleven.

Performance Expertise - Close to Home

Michael Hersey, PT, CSCS, CSAC

Director
Mike received a degree in Physical Therapy from the University of New England. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association as well as a certified speed and agility coach. Mike was one of the first physical therapists in the country named to the U.S. Olympic Sports Medicine Team when he worked with the U.S. Snowboard Team in Torino, Italy. In 2006, he was presented with APTA's President's Award. Mike works with physicians and athletic trainers using a team approach to rehabilitation, enabling individuals to maximize their sports performance and prevent injury.

Rick Sirois, MS, LAT, ATC, CSCS, CSAC

Manager
Rick received a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from the University of New England and a master's degree in Athletic Training from the California University of Pennsylvania. He is licensed and certified as an athletic trainer through the National Athletic Trainers' Association and a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. In addition he is a certified speed and agility coach through the NSPA as well as an ImPACT™ Trained Athletic Trainer in concussion management. Rick designs individualized performance enhancement programs for athletes, weekend warriors, at-risk clients and for the general fitness population. His background in Sports Medicine and injury evaluation/rehabilitation enables Rick to address specific physical impairments and design programs to achieve solid results, allowing his clients to attain their athletic development, functional training, health and wellness goals.

Anthony Arsenault, PTA

Physical Therapist Assistant
Anthony received his degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant from Kennebec Valley Community College. He has worked in various disciplines within the physical therapy field over the past 6 years, including home health care, skilled nursing, and sports medicine / outpatient services. These experiences enable Anthony to deliver quality of care to individuals of various ages and ailments. Anthony works with physical therapists, athletic trainers and strength and conditioning specialists delivering a team approach to rehabilitation, allowing individuals to reach functional goals and to maximize their recovery.
