Individuals receive a joint-by-joint orthopedic screen, assessment of fundamental movement patterns and a review of prior injuries. Challenges are identified, goals set and a customized performance program designed to ensure maximum health and performance.

Custom Designed Training and Treatment

The Sports Performance Center's team of specially trained and certified strength and conditioning experts, athletic trainers and physical therapists work with SMHC's Orthopedic and Sports Medicine physicians to help you reach your full potential or return to competition. Our services include: 

Sports Physical Therapy

Comprehensive injury management ensures you stay on top of your game. With SMHC's specialized sports physical therapy, we focus on injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement for athletic individuals of all ages.

Sports Medicine

Maximizing athletic performance is all about the team. Here you will find a team of clinical specialists focused on excellence. From leading-edge physical therapy to orthopedic surgeons, the SMHC Sports Performance Center offers a full spectrum of medical specialists.

Performance Training

- One-on-one training - Work with a certified athletic trainer, two to three sessions each week, to enhance strength and performance through a customized training program.  
- Small group training - Limited to four to six individuals in each session, small group training is facilitated and monitored by qualified staff to ensure proper technique.
- Summer Performance Program - Reduce the risk of injury and prepare for the fall athletic season. Program runs for six weeks plus pre- and post- program data collection.
 

Comprehensive Concussion Management

We offer baseline testing of student-athletes using ImPACT™ neurocognitive testing, post assessment and cognitive testing for concussions, and full rehabilitation services. We also provide ImPACT Pediatric, the only FDA-cleared assessment tool for athletes ages five to eleven.

Outstanding Expertise Close to Home

Michael Hersey, PT, CSCS, CSAC

Director
Mike received a degree in Physical Therapy from the University of New England. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association as well as a certified speed and agility coach. Mike was one of the first physical therapists in the country named to the U.S. Olympic Sports Medicine Team when he worked with the U.S. Snowboard Team in Torino, Italy. In 2006, he was presented with APTA's President's Award. Mike works with physicians and athletic trainers using a team approach to rehabilitation, enabling individuals to maximize their sports performance and prevent injury.

Rick Sirois, MS, LAT, ATC, CSCS, CSAC

Manager
Rick received a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from the University of New England and a master's degree in Athletic Training from the California University of Pennsylvania. He is licensed and certified as an athletic trainer through the National Athletic Trainers' Association and a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. In addition he is a certified speed and agility coach through the NSPA as well as an ImPACT™ Trained Athletic Trainer in concussion management. Rick designs individualized performance enhancement programs for athletes, weekend warriors, at-risk clients and for the general fitness population. His background in Sports Medicine and injury evaluation/rehabilitation enables Rick to address specific physical impairments and design programs to achieve solid results, allowing his clients to attain their athletic development, functional training, health and wellness goals.

Anthony Arsenault, PTA

Physical Therapist Assistant
Anthony received his degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant from Kennebec Valley Community College. He has worked in various disciplines within the physical therapy field over the past 6 years, including home health care, skilled nursing, and sports medicine / outpatient services. These experiences enable Anthony to deliver quality of care to individuals of various ages and ailments. Anthony works with physical therapists, athletic trainers and strength and conditioning specialists delivering a team approach to rehabilitation, allowing individuals to reach functional goals and to maximize their recovery.

Emily Lodge, DPT

Physical Therapist
Emily received a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of New England in 2016. She has clinical experiences in home health, inpatient care, and outpatient physical therapy. Emily takes special interest in orthopedic and sports injuries, utilizing comprehensive, holistic, and patient-centered care to return the patient to prior level of functioning and to prevent re-injury.

Amy McManus, DPT, CSCS

Physical Therapist and Strength and Conditioning Specialist
Amy received a doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of New England. She is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Amy has focused her career on sports injury and post-operative rehabilitation and enjoys addressing postural and biomechanical abnormalities that may lead to pain and dysfunction. Her experience and interest in these areas allow for comprehensive treatment of all types of injuries to get the patient back to pre-injury level as soon as possible.

Arin Auger, ACT, EMT, LAT

Athletic Trainer
Arin received her degree in Athletic Training from Colby-Sawyer. She is a Certified Athletic Trainer and a licensed Advanced EMT in the state of Maine.  Arin has been working with Middle and High School Athletes for the last six years. Arin is also a Preceptor for the Athletic training programs of the University of New England and the University of Southern Maine. 

Stephanie Gabriner, MSEd, ATC, LAT

Athletic Trainer
Stephanie received her degree in Athletic Training from Springfield College and a master’s of education in Athletic Training from Old Dominion University. She is a certified athletic trainer and licensed in the state of Maine. Stephanie’s background in sports medicine allows her to provide health care to local middle school and high school athletes. She is also a preceptor for the Athletic Training Education Program at the University of New England.

Michael "Tony" Giordano, Jr., ATC, LAT

Athletic Trainer
Tony received his degree in Athletic Training from the University of Southern Maine. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer and is licensed in the state of Maine. Tony has been working with student athletes at Thornton Academy since the spring of 2011. He has also been a preceptor for the Athletic Training Education Programs of the University of New England and the University of Southern Maine since 2010.

Jessie Hobgood, ATC, LAT

Athletic Trainer
Jessie received a degree in Athletic Training from the University of Southern Maine. She is licensed and certified as an Athletic Trainer through the National Athletic Trainer’s Association, and is an ImPACT trained provider.  Jessie has been working with student-athletes at Sanford Public Schools since the fall of 2008, and serves as a preceptor of Athletic Training Students at both the University of Southern Maine and the University of New England since 2009. 

Emily Koehler, MS, CSCS, USAW-1

Strength and Conditioning Specialist
Emily received a Master’s of Science from Springfield College. She is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association as well as USAW Level 1 Coach through USA Weightlifting. Emily has worked as a Strength and Conditioning Coach at College of the Holy Cross, University of Connecticut, and Springfield College.

Kaitlyn Waldron, ATC, LAT

Athletic Trainer
Kate received her degree in Athletic Training from the University of New England. She is licensed and certified as an Athletic Trainer through the National Athletic Trainers’ Association as well as an ImPACT™ Trained Athletic Trainer through ImPACT Applications. Kate uses her training in Sports Medicine to provide health care to local middle school and high school athletes participating in athletics through a coordinated team approach with physicians, physical therapists, and fellow athletic trainers. Kate also currently serves as the Chair of the Maine Athletic Trainers’ Association Young Professionals’ Committee.

Matt Donohue DPT, ATC

Physical Therapist
Matt Donohue earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Training at UNE in 2008 and has maintained his Athletic Training Certification since. He earned his doctorate in physical therapy at Duke University in 2011.  Over the last 8 years, he has practiced as a physical therapist and spent much time with the general orthopedic population and has enjoyed treating a variety of folks including the elderly population, weekend warriors, and athletes. Over the past 4 years, he has specialized more in the evaluation and treatment of runners and high school athletes. He’s genuinely interested in helping people to return to their desired level of function. He has pursued a variety of continuing education courses to expand his skill set with the goal of attaining multiple ways to approach patient care.

Kiel Hiller DPT, CSCS

Physical Therapist
Kiel received his Bachelor’s in Exercise Science from the University of New England and his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Rutgers University in 2015. He is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association with his Level 1 certification in dry needling from Myopain. Kiel has focused his time on sports, orthopedic, and spine rehabilitation to address impairments and return patients to their prior level of function.

Megan Gilbert BS, PTA

Physical Therapy Assistant
Megan received her Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Exercise Science from the University of New England and her degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant from Kennebec Valley Community College. Megan spent 3 years in the skilled nursing field of care and has clinical and work experience in the sports medicine/outpatient/pediatric setting.  Megan has always had a passion for sports/return to play and an interest in orthopedic care. She enjoys the interdisciplinary approach to care to ensure each patient can return to their highest level of function and/or sport.

Erik Anderson ATC, LAT

Athletic Trainer
Erik received a Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training from the University of New England in 2018. He is certified as an Athletic Trainer through the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and is licensed in the state of Maine. Erik has been working with student-athletes at Wells High School since the fall of 2018.

Emily Nicholson, ATC, LAT

Athletic Trainer
Emily received her Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training from the University of Southern Maine. She is a certified athletic trainer and licensed in the state of Maine. Emily’s background in sports medicine allows her to provide health care to local middle school and high school athletes. She is also a preceptor for the Athletic Training Education Program at the University of Southern Maine.

Joshua Woodward, ATC, LAT

Athletic Trainer
Josh received his Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training from Norwich University. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer and is licensed in the state of Maine. Josh has been working with student athletes at Old Orchard Beach High School and Loranger Middle School since the fall of 2018.

Nate Colpitts, ATC, LAT, CSCS

Athletic Trainer and Strength and Conditioning Specialist
Nate received his Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training from the University of Southern Maine. He is a certified athletic trainer and licensed in the state of Maine. He is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Beginning in the summer of 2018, Nate currently splits his time inside our Saco facility designing programs for performance training clients and working with high school/middle school athletes at the Massabesic School Department.
