What is medical oncology?
Medical oncology is a critical component in modern cancer care. Oncologists drive care plan development—managing therapies as well as coordinating care among other cancer specialists who focus on prevention, treatment and clinical trials.
What is hematology?
Hematologists are specifically trained in the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders. This includes conditions affecting red and white blood cells, platelets, lymph nodes, bone marrow, blood vessels, and the spleen.
Seamless Care Coordination and Support
MaineHealth Cancer Care and IV Therapy provides radiation therapy, IV therapy, and blood disorder services. We also maintain close communication with your primary care provider and extended care team. Cancer support services also include clinical patient navigators and social workers.
IV Therapy | Infusion Therapy
Patients undergoing intravenous (IV) chemotherapy receive care from certified chemotherapy nurses in convenient, patient-centered locations. A pharmacist with expertise in oncology oversees care to ensure safe administration of chemotherapy and other treatments. The pharmacist also is available to counsel patients about their medication needs and answer any questions they might have.
Infusion therapy medications help patients fight cancer and manage the symptoms of cancer or its treatment. These include:
- Intravenous chemotherapy, targeted biotherapies and monoclonal antibodies
- Fluid support to prevent dehydration
- Anti-nausea medication
- Bone-strengthening medications
- Antibiotics to fight or prevent infection
- Injections to promote stimulation of blood cell development
- Infusions of blood and blood products
How long will my treatment last?
This depends on the medication that you are to receive and on specific guidelines from your physician. Treatments range from 30 minutes to 8 hours. Ask your doctor for an estimated treatment time.
Can I bring family/friends with me?
Absolutely. Our space is limited so we ask that you bring only one person with you. Also, please do not bring children under the age of 14 years as some of the medications administered may be harmful.
Do I have to have a driver come with me?
Some of the medications may cause drowsiness so we may ask you to have a driver attend with you.
Can I eat and drink the day of my treatment?
Yes. We encourage you to eat and drink as you normally would. You may also bring food with you. If you are not allowed to eat due to a particular blood test or exam, we will communicate that information to you.
