Britt Crewse, MBA, MHS, CPA
President, MaineHealth Southern Region
Britt Crewse is the Southern Region President for MaineHealth, overseeing all clinical care and operations. He joined MaineHealth in January of 2024 after serving in various health care leadership roles for nearly 30 years.
Throughout his career, Britt has focused on building strategic plans and high-performing teams to increase the value of patient care and strengthen patient outcomes. He most recently was the chief executive officer of adult hospitals at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). During his tenure, he spearheaded a collaborative effort that produced measurable improvements in quality, safety and patient experience at University Hospital, Wallace Conerly Critical Care Hospital and Wiser Hospital, all on the Medical Center’s Jackson campus. He also has led teams at Duke University Health System in Durham, N.C., Ernst & Young LLP and Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, GA.
Britt earned his Master of Health Science and Master of Business Administration at the University of Florida and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Ohio State University.
Joel L. Botler, MD
Chief Medical Officer, MaineHealth Southern Region
Dr. Joel Botler serves as the Southern Region Chief Medical Officer for MaineHealth, overseeing all clinical, medical management, and programmatic aspects of health care delivery. In this role he also serves as the primary liaison between medical center management and the private physician practice community.
Dr. Botler’s relationship with MHMMC dates to 1979 when he began his internal medicine internship and residency at the Portland location after earning his medical degree at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Brooklyn. Since that time, he has served the southern Maine community as a primary care internist for 30 years; helped to found InterMed in 1995; and held numerous leadership roles at MHMMC focusing on areas such as family medicine, geriatrics and adult medicine. Most recently, Dr. Botler held the title of MHMMC Vice President, Adult Medicine Service Line, and co-chair of the MaineHealth Medical Group Finance Committee.
Dr. Botler is well regarded as a “physician’s physician” throughout the community, earning praise from peers and patients alike. He is a four-time winner of the MHMMC Portland Family Medicine Residency Program Inpatient Attending of the Year award and has also been recognized as the Maine Alzheimer’s Champion for 2011.
Kathryn Cope, MBA, FACHE
Chief Operating Officer, MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Biddeford/Sanford
Kathryn Cope is Chief Operating Officer at MHMMC Biddeford/Sanford. She is responsible for day-to-day operations and serves as a key strategic advisor to the President, other senior executives, and physician leaders.
Kathryn joined MaineHealth in 2023, bringing more than 25 years of experience as a health care executive in acute care clinical operations, finance and service line strategy. She previously served as vice president of operations and critical care at MHMMC Portland. Kathryn earned her undergraduate degree in Economics & Classics from Bowdoin College and her MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia.
Lugene “Lou” Inzana, MBA, CPA
Chief Financial Officer, MaineHealth Maine Medical Center and Associate Chief Financial Officer, MaineHealth
Lugene “Lou” Inzana serves as MHMMC's Chief Financial Officer and as Associate Chief Financial Officer for MaineHealth. In his roles, Lou provides leadership and financial oversight of the medical center and financial support services for the other MaineHealth entities.
Lou is a seasoned health care finance expert with nearly 30 years of progressive leadership experience at organizations throughout the Northeast. He serves as a key strategic and financial advisor to the President of MHMMC, providing the analytical framework and business judgment necessary to evaluate alternative initiatives and help drive operating and financial performance. He has responsibility for budget and reimbursement, financial reporting, supply chain, financial planning, and revenue cycle management.
Prior to joining MaineHealth in 2014, Lou was most recently Vice President of Finance and Support Services/Chief Financial Officer at Lawrence + Memorial Corporation/Hospital in New London, Conn. Over the course of his career, Lou has carved out a reputation as a strong leader with high integrity, top-flight communication skills, and a passion for health care.
Lou holds both a B.A. in Accounting and an MBA in Finance from St. Bonaventure (N.Y.) University. He is also a Certified Public Accountant, a Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, and a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives. In addition to his professional endeavors, Lou has been an active volunteer for many years, serving on a wide range of boards and committees for organizations that promote stronger communities.
Devin Carr, DNP, RN, RRT, ACNS-BC, NEA-BC, CPPS
Chief Nursing Officer, MaineHealth Southern Region
Devin Carr serves as the Southern Region Chief Nursing Officer at MaineHealth, leading MHMMC’s nursing team. This includes nurses at MHMMC Portland who have received four consecutive Magnet recognitions for nursing excellence. Devin joined MaineHealth in 2020, coming from the University of Michigan Medical Center (U of M) in Ann Arbor, a Magnet-designated hospital, where he served as the chief nursing officer for one of the nation’s leading medical centers. Prior to U of M, Devin served as Administrative Director of the Surgery and Transplant Patient Care Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, a three-time Magnet-designated facility, in Nashville, Tennessee.
He has more than 30 years of experience in health care in a variety of clinical, academic and leadership roles. He has employed collaboration across multiple enterprises to improve patient satisfaction scores, reduce risk and harm, and strengthen regulatory compliance readiness.
Devin earned his DNP from Concordia University Wisconsin, an MSN from Clarkson College, and a BSN from Middle Tennessee State University, as well as an associate degree of applied science in respiratory therapy from California College for Health Sciences.
Douglas B. Sawyer, MD, PhD
Chief Academic Officer, MaineHealth
Dr. Doug Sawyer is chief academic officer for MaineHealth. In his role, he oversees all aspects of the health system's academic and research missions, including medical training and post graduate programs, the Maine Track program partnership with Tufts University School of Medicine and also MaineHealth Institute for Research (MHIR).
Dr. Sawyer joined MaineHealth in 2014 to serve as MHMMC Portland's chief of cardiac services and physician leader of the cardiovascular services line. Prior to that, Dr. Sawyer worked at Vanderbilt University where he served in clinical and academic leadership positions. He earned his medical degree and doctorate from Cornell University and completed his postgraduate training, including his internship and residency in Internal Medicine and his Clinical Cardiology Fellowship, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Dr. Sawyer continues to serve his community as a practicing cardiologist.
Mark G. Parker, MD
Vice President, Quality and Safety, MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland
Dr. Mark Parker has been a nephrologist at MHMMC Portland since 1999. He assumed the role of Vice President of Quality and Safety in 2017. He attended the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and completed an internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at Tufts (formerly “New England”) Medical Center. He worked briefly in private practice and subsequently at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass. before moving to Maine.
At MHMMC Portland, Dr. Parker has served in a variety of leadership roles, including 15 years as the nephrology fellowship program director and nine years as the nephrology division director. During that time, he developed expertise and a national reputation in nephrology medical education and health care workforce issues. He continues to participate in clinical care and teaching since transitioning to quality and safety leadership.
As a quality and safety leader, Dr. Parker has completed certificate work at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in both the Improvement Advisor and Patient Safety Executive programs. He provides oversight for the medical center's operational excellence, patient experience, risk management/patient safety and quality analysis teams, and he also helps lead MaineHealth Medical Group quality improvement activities. Dr. Parker retains a strong presence in medical education, guiding quality and safety curricula and supporting student and resident involvement in related projects.
Margo Peffer
Vice President, Human Resources, MaineHealth Maine Medical Center
Margo Peffer is the MHMMC Vice President of Human Resources. She oversees HR functions at all MHMMC locations, and at the MaineHealth Institute for Research.
Margo joined MaineHealth in 2023, following a long career at Hannaford Supermarkets, where she was Chief People Officer and Vice President of Human Resources, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Internal communications. In a career spanning over 20 years, Margo progressed from store manager into human resources, and served in numerous HR positions.
Margo has her Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) Certification from Wharton Business School through The University of Pennsylvania, has attended the Harvard Business School Executive Leadership Program, and graduated from University of Maine with a degree in Business Administration.
Clayton M. Holtzman
Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs, MaineHealth
Clayton Holtzman is Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs at MaineHealth, overseeing strategic communications support for MaineHealth Maine Medical Center.
Clay joined MaineHealth in 2015 and supports internal and external communications as well as strategic communications for organizational priorities. He is a member of the MaineHealth Marketing & Communications Department senior team.
Previously, Clay served as director of Population Health Communications at Renton, Wash.-based Providence St. Joseph Health, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems. He has also managed public relations for Swedish Health Services and was part of the digital communications team at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, both in Seattle. In a previous career, Clay worked as a business journalist in the Pacific Northwest and Southwest regions.
Clay is a Fellow of the Advisory Board and a member of the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development.
