Portland Emergency Department

Our Portland emergency department (ED) is Maine's only Level One certified trauma center and we also offer the state's only pediatric emergency department. Our state-of-the-art facility is designed to meet the needs of a high-volume patient population from Maine and New Hampshire, as well as visitors from all over the world. As the most advanced trauma system in Maine we offer world-class diagnostic technology and treatments. 

Biddeford/Sanford Emergency Departments

Our emergency departments in Biddeford and Sanford, Maine are also open all day, every day. Our expert team of emergency care providers uses the latest treatment protocols and advanced diagnostic technology to quickly assess and care for patients with urgent and life-threatening conditions. 

All three locations offer:

  • Easy access to specialists when needed, such as cardiologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedists and neonatologists
  • Highly-trained emergency nurses with specialty certifications in advanced adult and pediatric life support and trauma care
  • Dedicated radiology suite offering x-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound
  • On-site lab resulting in faster turn-around time for results
  • Acute psychiatry unit (APU) designed to safely manage patients experiencing a wide range of psychiatric emergencies

When do I need to go to the emergency room?

  • Arm or leg weakness, difficulty speaking
  • Bleeding that won’t stop
  • Chest pain
  • Fainting, sudden dizziness
  • Falls greater than 10 feet resulting in injury
  • Heart attack
  • Physical attack or rape
  • Poisoning
  • Seizures
  • Stroke
  • Sudden changes, or loss, in vision
  • Suicidal thoughts or actions, mental health crisis
  • Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
