Outpatient IV Therapy

Patients undergoing intravenous (IV) chemotherapy have a state-of-the-art facility designed for their comfort at Maine Medical Center. Our outpatient IV therapy services practice is located on the hospital's Scarborough campus, adjacent to other oncology services. Staffed by chemotherapy certified nurses, the program offers high-quality clinical care in a convenient, patient-centered environment.

The program also includes an on-site pharmacy staffed by a pharmacist with expertise in oncology. The pharmacist supports clinical staff to ensure safe administration of chemotherapy and other treatments. The pharmacist also is available to counsel patients about their medication needs and answer any questions they might have.

A comprehensive array of infusion therapies is available - medications that either fight cancer or intravenous solutions that help patients manage the symptoms of cancer or its treatment. These include:

  • Intravenous chemotherapy, targeted biotherapies and monoclonal antibodies

  • Fluid support to prevent dehydration

  • Anti-nausea medication

  • Bone-strengthening medications

  • Antibiotics to fight or prevent infection

  • Injections to promote stimulation of blood cell development

  • Infusions of blood and blood products

IV Therapy services are conveniently located at the Scarborough campus of the Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute. The program is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. For patients who require after-hours, weekend, and holiday treatment, infusion therapy is provided at MMC's Gibson Pavilion, the hospital's dedicated inpatient cancer unit. The same experienced oncology nurses provide IV therapy at both locations, ensuring continuity of care.

How long will my treatment last?

This depends on the medication that you are to receive and on specific guidelines from your physician. Treatments range from 30 minutes to 8 hours. Please call Outpatient IV Therapy at (207) 396-7705 for an estimate of your treatment time.

Can I bring family/friends with me?

Absolutely. Our space is limited so we ask that you bring only one person with you. Also, please do not bring children under the age of 14 years as some of the medications administered may be harmful.

Do I have to have a driver come with me?

Some of the medications may cause drowsiness so we may ask you to have a driver attend with you.

Can I eat and drink the day of my treatment?

Yes. We encourage you to eat and drink as you normally would. You may bring food with you or you can order something from our Atrium Café. If you are not allowed to eat due to a particular blood test or exam, we will communicate that information to you.
