- Patient Centered
These values serve as the basis for our care philosophy which places patients at the center of every decision we make.
SMHC was formed on January 1, 2014 when Goodall Hospital and Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) merged to become Southern Maine Health Care, the fifth largest healthcare system in Maine.
The histories of both Goodall and SMHC are remarkably similar. Like many hospitals around the country in the early 20th century, SMHC and Goodall Hospital were established to meet the need for a centralized healthcare facility in growing towns. The first of the two - SMHC - was founded by Moses Webber, an overseer at the Pepperell Mill in Biddeford, as Webber Hospital in 1906 in memory of his wife Eliza. Goodall Hospital was founded in 1928 by George Goodall, owner of the expansive Goodall Mills, in memory of his wife Henrietta.
Over the years, as the hospitals grew, Webber Hospital's name was changed to Southern Maine Medical Center to better reflect the regional nature of its services.
When you enter a hospital or physician office for care, you need to know that you will receive the best diagnosis, treatment, and surgical technologies available provided by healthcare professionals you can trust. Our healthcare professionals have credentials from some of the world's leading medical schools and teaching centers. They could have worked anywhere. But they were drawn by SMHC's innovative practices, our demonstrated commitment to growth and excellence, and the beauty of southern Maine.
