MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland (MHMMCP) is a Level 1 trauma center and a tertiary referral base for over one million people. It is a nationally-recognized regional leader for open-heart surgery, vascular and thoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, high-risk obstetrics, neurosurgery, and orthopedic surgery. Our department is comprised of approximately 60 anesthesiologists, 23 anesthesia residents, 2 cardiothoracic anesthesia fellows and 80 CRNA's. Together, we take pride in the delivery of clinical care focused on excellence, compassion, collaboration and innovation. Additionally, we are committed to the educational development of outstanding, well rounded clinicians and health care leaders as well as the advancement of knowledge through scientific and clinical discovery. We recently expanded our residency to eight categorical residency positions per year.
Founded in 1953, our residency program maintains a long tradition of outstanding and rigorous clinical training which is unique due to the small size of our residency relative to our case volume. MHMMCP provides over 40,000 anesthetics per year on the MaineHealth Portland Campus and at MaineHealth Surgery Center Scarborough. Our large surgical volume and small residency size allows us to assign residents based primarily on their educational needs rather than our clinical demands. Over the years we have been fortunate to recruit a variety of incredibly strong clinical teachers from all regions of the country, providing rich and diverse training for our residents. The majority of our faculty members are fellowship trained and more than half of our residents go on to obtain fellowships. The excellence of our residency program is reflected in our consistently strong match results.
Another unique feature of our department is our focus on work-life balance and our family-like atmosphere. While we are dedicated clinicians, educators and investigators, we are also dedicated parents, athletes, pilots, sailors, artists, musicians, etc. We believe a healthy balance between work and personal life is the key to long, productive and rewarding careers.
