The mission of the MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) Portland Acute Care Physical Therapy Residency program is to offer high-quality, accessible, postgraduate training in the evaluation and management of a diverse patient population. Our goal is to better serve local communities and elevate the role of physical therapy within the acute care setting. Through research, innovation, and evidence-based practice, we aim to cultivate excellence while developing strong patient advocates and skilled educators for the next generation.
Our residency program offers clinical exposure to multiple acute care service lines including orthopedics, oncology, burn and soft tissue, cardiopulmonary, neurology, critical care, emergency medicine and pediatrics. Residents will experience clinical practice across the continuum of care, from intensive care units to step-down floors. Residents will benefit from over 150 hours of one-on-one clinical mentoring and over 300 hours of structured didactic curriculum. In addition, residents will participate in multidisciplinary in-services, case presentations, journal clubs, grand rounds, interprofessional experiences, observations and teaching.
