What is psychiatric care?

Psychiatry care can treat a variety of mental health conditions. Psychiatrists are medical doctors with special training and education in mental health. They have the skills and expertise to diagnose and treat both mental and physical problems related to psychological disorders. Psychiatrists may prescribe medications and may also provide counseling or psychotherapy services.

  • MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland Outpatient Psychiatry: A referral from your PCP or family doctor is required, regardless of your insurance coverage. Please call 207-662-2221 and select the "new patient" option.
  • MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland Inpatient Psychiatry: Send an email to P6info@MaineHealth.org. If you are a medical provider/nursing home facility, call 207-662-6632 option 2 to make a referral.
