Do I need to fast?
Most tests do not require fasting. This is a list of the most common tests that require fasting:

  • Lipid profile
  • Comprehensive metabolic panel
  • Basic metabolic panel
  • Glucose
  • Uric acid

If you are unsure if you should fast, please call 207-373-6550 for assistance.

How long do I need to fast?
For a lipid profile, you should fast overnight (12 hours). Do not consume alcohol 24 hours prior to this test. For all other tests, 8 hours is sufficient. You should drink water during this time to ensure you are hydrated at the time of your blood draw.

Do I need an appointment?
For most testing, you do not need an appointment. If your provider has ordered a glucose tolerance test, any breath testing, therapeutic phlebotomy, or semen analysis, you will need to make an appointment. Please call 207-373-6550 to schedule these tests.

How and when will I receive my results?
Your results will be sent to your provider when they are completed. For most tests, you can expect your provider to have the results in approximately 3 days. Some tests must be sent to a reference laboratory and can take up to a week or more to complete. Your provider will contact you regarding your results. Due to confidentiality rules, we are unable to give any test results over the phone or at any lab draw stations. You may also access your test results using MyChart, the MaineHealth patient portal

Do I need an order for my testing?
If you are a MaineHealth patient, you do not need to have a paper copy of your lab order(s). Our laboratory staff can access your orders from any of our draw sites. Patients of non-MaineHealth practices will need to have a written requisition. You may have your provider fax the request to our lab at 207-373-6552.
