
Dr. Mahmoud joined MaineHealth Nephrology in July 2021. He completed his internal medicine residency at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center and his nephrology fellowship at Boston University. He serves as the Program Director for the Nephrology Fellowship Program and as the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. His academic interests include genetic kidney diseases, glomerular diseases, and medical education. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Vella is a professor of medicine and the Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Transplantation. He completed his residency training at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, and Boston City Hospital. He then pursued fellowship training in general nephrology and transplant nephrology through the combined Brigham and Women's/Mass General Hospital program in Boston. Dr. Vella joined the faculty at MaineHealth Nephrology in 1999 and has since been actively involved in teaching, research, and leadership. He serves as the Medical Director of the MaineHealth Transplant Program and the MaineHealth Nephrology Medical Group. He has published more than 50 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and is a section editor for UpToDate.

Dr. Michael Akom completed his internal medicine residency and the first portion of his nephrology fellowship at the University of Maryland before finishing his fellowship at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center. His clinical interests span a broad range of nephrology, and he is one of three interventional nephrologists at the MaineHealth Vascular Access Center. Dr. Akom serves as the Medical Director of the Coastal Dialysis Facility and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. AlShanableh is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and serves as the Associate Program Director for the Nephrology Fellowship. She completed her internal medicine residency at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center and her nephrology fellowship at the University of Pittsburg Medical Center. Her areas of interest include glomerular diseases, electrolyte disorders, and medical education.

Dr. Amatruda completed his internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Deaconess and his nephrology fellowship at UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus. He currently serves as the medical director of the Southern Maine Dialysis Facility. His clinical interests include outpatient dialysis, chronic kidney disease, and acute kidney injury, with a particular focus on patients with cardiorenal syndrome. His research interests have focused on the development of novel biomarkers of kidney injury.

Dr. Cashion joined MaineHealth after completing his internal medicine residency, general nephrology fellowship, and transplant fellowship at the University of Pittsburg Medical Center. His academic interests focus on improving outcomes and expanding access to kidney transplantation. He is an assistant professor of medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Cosma completed both his internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship training at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center. His clinical interests include interventional nephrology, outpatient dialysis, and complex hypertension. He serves as the Director of the MaineHealth Vascular Access Program and the Casco Bay Dialysis Facility. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Djamali is Professor and Maurice S. Segal, MD, Chair of Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, and Chair of the Department of Medicine at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland. He earned his medical degree from Montpellier Medical School in Montpellier, France. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI and his fellowship in nephrology at the University of Wisconsin Madison in Madison, WI. Dr Djamali is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the American Society of Transplantation, the American College of Physicians, and the Association of Professors of Medicine. He is a national leader in the areas of antibody-mediated processes and kidney transplant outcomes. Dr. Djamali has been funded by the NIH, Foundations, and Industry throughout his career. He has served on grant review panels for the NIH, VA-H, and national societies, as well as advisory panels for the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry. He has been an invited speaker nationally and internationally, and a member of planning committees for national and international society meetings. Dr. Djamali has published more than 200 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and is the associate editor of Kidney360, the most recent publication from the American Society of Nephrology.

Dr. Almeida is a General and Interventional Nephrologist at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, and the Medical Director of Home Dialysis at Freedom Center Fore River in Portland. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Loyola Medicine/MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, IL, and his fellowships in Nephrology and Interventional Nephrology at the University of Wisconsin. His areas of interest include home dialysis, urgent-start peritoneal dialysis, polycystic kidney disease, critical care nephrology, dialysis access, and medical education.

Dr. Fuentes completed her residency training in North Carolina and her fellowship training at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center. Her medical interests include pregnancy related renal pathology, onconephrology, and acute dialysis. She serves as the medical director of the inpatient Hemotherapeutics Unit.

Dr. Hayden joined MaineHealth Nephrology after completing his nephrology fellowship at the combined Brigham and Women's/Mass General Hospital program in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Hayden's academic interests include artificial intelligence and machine learning in nephrology and medical education. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Oakley joined MaineHealth Nephrology in July of 2021. He completed his internal medicine residency at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington, North Carolina. He is a graduate of the MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Nephrology Fellowship program. He is the medical director of the York Center Dialysis Facility. His medical interests include glomerular diseases, chronic kidney disease, and home dialysis.

Dr. Parker is the Vice President of Quality and Safety for MaineHealth Maine Medical Center and the former director of the Division of Nephrology and Transplantation. He is a quality improvement specialist and is known nationally in nephrology for his work in medical education and workforce recruitment. His clinical areas of interest include resistant hypertension management and kidney transplantation. He completed his internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Parker completed his internal medicine residency at Hartford Hospital and his nephrology fellowship training at the University of Iowa Medical Center. His clinical interests include chronic kidney disease, dialysis therapies, and nephrolithiasis. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Taylor is a nephrologist, clinical investigator, and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Tufts University School of Medicine. Since completing his nephrology training at Brigham and Women's Hospital in 2005, he has served as Principal Investigator on multiple R01 grants. He currently serves as a Deputy Editor in nephrology for UpToDate. He is delighted to precept fellows during their outpatient clinic rotations.
